Mural Replica in Grade 3

In Mrs. Ross's grade 3 class, students have been studying the Garry Oak Ecosystem in great depth across the curriculum. They have created brainstorm webs with details about the five senses for stories they are writing about their own Secret Forest.

As well, each student selected a section of the mural design and replicated it on a class banner. Once students drew out the sections, they were outlined in dark marker and painted with brilliant water colours. Look for this artistic creation in the hallway at Rogers.

Students Leave a Legacy at Rogers

Every student at Rogers was able to dabble in mural painting. Parent volunteers helped students get prepared by putting on paint shirts, as Joanne Thomson led each student through the use of acrylic finger painting to enhance the bark, lichen, moss and other areas requiring details on the mural.
The rain did not keep our student painting day from being successful!
Thanks to our parent volunteers!

Student Contributions to the Mural

Many of our grade 5 students had an opportunity to take part in a lesson with Joanne Thomson about the specific flora and fauna living in the Garry Oak Ecosystem. The students each selected their own plant or animal to research and then draw. Many of the student images have been superimposed on to the mural design.
The drawing above identifies the student contributions to the mural.

Mural Progress: May 25th

Mural Painting
Mural artist, Joanne Thomson has started painting the mural! She is mentoring two former Rogers students, Bryn and Ryan, on the art of mural painting. Joanne welcomes adult volunteers to come out to help. If you are able to dedicate an hour or more to help paint, please email Joanne to set up a time: joannedthomson@shaw.ca

Rogers Students to Paint
Our students will each have the wonderful opportunity to put some paint on the mural on Monday, May 27th, if it's not raining.

Chalking and Outlining the Design: May 16

While Joanne chalks in the design, Bryn begin to outline with paint.

Working with the Artist: May 16

Artist, Joanne Thomson, talks with students about some of the images in the mural design.

Students Getting Involved

Students have been part of the learning from the beginning of the process: they had an assembly to learn about the Garry Oak Ecosystem and the invasive English Ivy, they took part in a vote for the mural draft, they have watched the wall get prepped for the mural, their teachers have been teaching them about the Garry Oak Ecosystem and each class has gone on a Christmas Hill Hike. As well, one of the classes researched and drew images from the Garry Oak Ecosystem that have been incorporated into the mural design. On Monday, May 27th, students have the opportunity to put paint to the mural!

Base Coat on Walls: May 10

On another lovely May morning the painting crew was at the school putting a white base coat on the cement walls.

Even the Principal, Ms. Trofimuk got involved in some painting!

The wall is all ready for the mural! Once Saanich City Council approves our Mural Application, we are ready to have our artist begin to chalk out the mural on the cement canvas!

Mural Painting

Parents are invited to help get involved in the painting. If you are interested in helping on the week of May 21st to May 24th or any other days to May 30th, please let Ms. Trofimuk know at: mtrofimuk@sd61.bc.ca

Artist,  Joanne Thomson and two former Rogers student volunteers will be outside painting the mural.

Our students will each have an opportunity to participate in the mural on Monday, May 27th!

Walls Get Cleaned: May 9th

On the warm and sunny spring morning of Thursday, May 9th the SD61 painting crew came out to Rogers to scrape and power wash the remnants of the English ivy from the two cement walls. The walls were completely smooth and ready for paint.

Students observe another step in the Mural Project process: cleaning the walls.

On Friday, May 10th, the base coat for the Mural will be painted.

Toonie Hike: May 6 to 16th

Christmas Hill Toonie Hike 2013
Hiking in our school neighborhood helps to promote Daily Physical Activity (DPA).
Students at Rogers school will hike Christmas Hill during the weeks of May 6th to 16th to help fundraise for the mural on the front of our school.  While on the toonie hike, students will learn about the Garry oak ecosystem on the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary. The future mural will be a representation of the Garry oak ecosystem on Christmas Hill so the students will be making a connection between the ecosystem and the future mural. Students will be drawing or writing about discoveries they make while on their hike and these will be posted beside our Mural Timeline in the school for everyone to see.

If you would like to make a donation it would be much appreciated.
PLEASE have donations returned to the office by May 16th.

For each Toonie collected the student will receive a draw ballot:
Class Prize: Pizza Lunch    1st Prize: iPod Touch   Secondary prizes:  Summer fun toys

Staff Experiences Garry Oak Ecosystem: April 26th

During the same week as Earth Day, the staff at Rogers took part in a Professional Development Day (April 26) hands on learning experience. Rogers staff was led by Science in Action educator, Yves Parizeau through the Garry Oak Ecosystem on the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary Path. Our well informed staff will take their experiential learning experience back to their students.

Earth Day Learning: April 22

The exciting part is now we are engaging our school & community in a celebration of learning about Garry oak ecosystems. On Earth Day (April 22), guest presenters came to our school’s Earth Day assembly. Carolyn Richman (environmental educator), Joanne Thomson (artist) & Sandy Munns (from Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary) educated students & staff about the Garry Oak ecosystem and the harmful effects of English ivy while Joanne began to draw a sample mural as students watched on.
